Pride Players Benefit a Success

This year’s Pride Players benefit performance produced both laughter and tears and gave a nice financial boost to the three sponsoring groups. Omaha PFLAG, our teen support group Proud Horizons and GLSEN each received $926 from the Sept. 30 benefit, an 84 percent increase from last year.
The audience of 105 in the small Hitchcock Theater at the Rose Blumkin Performing Arts Center included 35 members of Gay Straight Alliances in high schools and universities. Our thanks to donors Michael Jones and Gary Emenitove for subsidizing two-thirds of the ticket price for GSA members to make it easier for the students to attend.
NINE PEOPLE received training on Oct. 15 as speakers and panel members for the Safe Schools presentations that PFLAG and GLSEN conduct. We appreciate those who came for a refresher course, and we especially appreciate those who came for the first time.
We are trying to cope with an increasing demand from college teachers who want their students to hear from us, and we are grateful for the new members of our Speakers Bureau who are willing to give their time for this important work.
DURING OUR OCTOBER support-program meeting, a car belonging to one of our members was entered, and a cell phone and unit for recharging the phone were taken. The car was in the parking lot just outside Mead Hall.
This can serve as a reminder to all of us to take precautions. Be certain you lock your car. Don’t leave your cell phone where it might catch the eye of a thief. Betty and I have gotten into the habit of putting a lock bar on our steering wheel wherever we go.
TWENTY-SIX PEOPLE attended our October meeting. It was good to see so many there. The chatter at the pre-meeting socializing seemed especially lively. And, as always, none of that matters as much as whether we were able to help those who came to talk about uncertainties and difficulties in their personal lives, or the lives of their loved ones.
THE SMALL LIBRARY in our meeting place is expanding, and we are hoping it will expand more.
You might have an idea for a book, DVD or video with a gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgender theme that you would like PFLAG to purchase. If so, we now have an opportunity to do that with a donated $900 amazon.com gift certificate.
Go to the amazon.com web site and click on books, then click on gay and lesbian. You will see a large selection. You also can click on DVDs or videos.
If you see something you would like us to buy so you can borrow it from our library, notify PFLAG librarian Mary Spurgeon, who will place the order. Her phone: 292-1157. Her email for handling PFLAG library requests: omapflaglibrary@aol.com
BETTY AND I were waiting for the Walk As One event sponsored by NCCJ to start on a beautiful Sunday afternoon this month when a woman we didn’t know noticed the PFLAG t-shirts we were wearing.
“I support PFLAG,” she said. Good words to hear.
